Maitland to Whittingham Third Track Project

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is upgrading the rail line between Maitland and Whittingham to improve rail reliability and capacity between the Hunter Valley mine sites and the Port of Newcastle.

As part of the Australian Government's $1.2 billion Nation Building package, the project will increase the capacity of the rail system to meet projected demand for domestic and export coal.

The Maitland to Whittingham Third Track Project involves two stages:

Prime Minister the Hon. Kevin Rudd MP turned the first sod on this project on 14th May 2009 and construction works for Stage 1 commenced in July 2009.

The Hunter 8 Alliance will design and build the new track and was recently formed by Australian Rail Track Corporation with John Holland Pty Ltd and GHD Pty Ltd (GHD).
